Downside of glasses

Although glass is the predominant material used in window construction, its utilization has significant economic and environmental implications. Glass, particularly single-pane varieties, allows for the easy transfer of heat, leading to higher energy expenses during cold weather and excess heat infiltration in warmer seasons. Furthermore, glass production in construction carries a substantial carbon footprint, generating around 25,000 metric tons of emissions annually.

A promising alternative: transparent wood

In contrast, a promising alternative is emerging in the form of transparent wood. Transparent wood is achieved by subjecting wood from the rapidly growing, low-density balsa tree to an oxidation process at room temperature, rendering it nearly invisible. This wood is then impregnated with a synthetic polymer known as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), resulting in a product that is virtually see-through.

The inherent cellulose structure of transparent wood, combined with the energy-absorbing properties of the polymer filler, offers enhanced durability and reduced weight compared to glass. It can withstand more significant impacts without shattering, instead bending or splintering. Switching to transparent wood may also prove cost-effective, as it boasts roughly five times the thermal efficiency of glass, leading to reduced energy costs. Additionally, it is sourced from a sustainable, renewable resource with minimal carbon emissions and can be seamlessly integrated into existing industrial manufacturing processes.

What now?

The increase in coco lumber price in the Philippines, good lumber price in the Philippines or any other online construction supply are reasons why developing more sustainable alternatives is important. While transparent wood won’t be good for use any time soon, isn’t it good to know that there are upcoming products that would only make the construction supply industry more exciting.
