How I converted this log into P100K worth of furniture pieces

Four years ago, a 30-year-old Kamagong tree was uprooted from my garden during one of the strongest typhoons. The slabs of wood rested in the 932 sqm property for almost a year, while trying to look for ways to process this raw material.  Then, I thought of converting it into creative furniture pieces. Thanks to hardware in the Philippines for providing me everything I need.

Before we jump to the three types of creative pieces, let’s look at some materials that I got from a trusted online hardware in the Philippines

Sandpaper                             P12/pc

Varnish                             P29 - 700

Adhesive                            P186

Nails                             P85 - 1000

Solignum Wood Preservative                     P650 - 1863

Since these are big slabs of wood, I decided to seek the help of professional wood cutters.  I made sure to preserve the irregular shapes so that we achieve a not-your-typical table.

You will find that hardware in the Philippines offers a vast array of tools including a circular saw that ranges from P8,320 to 10,000.

Twin-perfect tables

These two long tables can sit 12 to 24 persons depending on its arrangement.  You will notice the Y-shaped top of the table that is a sure conversation piece!  Also, the crevices created by the natural aging of the wood and the damage made by termites resulted in a rustic appeal.

Single Y-shaped side table

This daring piece can serve as a dessert table or an accent piece in the living area.  I only wish the wood cutters didn’t have to perfect the feet of the tables so that we would’ve achieved unfinished-yet-chic pieces.

Charming Table-chair

Aside from the Kamagong wood, there was a spare young Narra cut from the same typhoon.  In order to maximize the special wood, I merged the two woods to come up with a charming table-chair ensemble.

This piece offers a dramatic museum-inspired look– perfectly positioned below a vintage painting.

I asked a furniture maker to assess these DIY pieces and we’re happy to hear that these are valued at almost a hundred thousand pesos.  This only goes to show that creativity applied to available materials can result in something highly entertaining and highly valued.
